Dermaplaning

What Is Dermaplaning?
Gentle exfoliation for smoother, more radiant-looking skin.
Dermaplaning is a non-invasive exfoliation treatment designed to remove dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (“peach fuzz”) from the surface of the skin. By clearing away this buildup, dermaplaning helps the skin feel softer, look brighter, and appear more even in texture and tone. It can also help skin care products absorb more effectively and create a smoother surface for makeup application.
At Winter Park Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we offer dermaplaning as a gentle skin resurfacing option for patients who want a refreshed appearance without downtime. We’ll help you decide whether dermaplaning is the right fit for your skin and whether it may work best on its own or as part of a broader skin care plan.
Who Is a Candidate for a Dermaplaning?
You may be a good candidate for dermaplaning if you want to improve:
- Dull or rough skin texture
- Fine facial hair
- Mild fine lines
- Uneven skin tone
- Makeup application experience
Dermaplaning is suitable for most skin types and tones, but it may not be the right choice if you have active acne, rosacea, other inflammatory skin conditions, a history of keloid scarring, or you are taking certain prescription medications. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your skin and help determine whether dermaplaning is the best option for your concerns.
Benefits of Dermaplane Resurfacing
Dermaplaning can improve the skin in several meaningful ways. Benefits may include:
- Smoother, softer skin
- A brighter, more even-looking complexion
- Less visible surface buildup and minor imperfections
- Better absorption of skin care products
- Smoother makeup application
- Immediate refreshment with little to no downtime
Because it gently exfoliates the skin’s surface without the use of chemicals or heat, dermaplaning can be a helpful option for patients who want a quick, visible skin refresh in a comfortable setting.
How Dermaplaning Works
Dermaplaning works by using a sterile surgical blade to gently remove dead skin cells and fine facial hair from the surface of the skin. During the treatment, the skin is held taut while light, controlled strokes are used to exfoliate the outermost layer. This process encourages healthy skin turnover and helps reveal smoother, fresher-looking skin underneath. The treatment is typically painless and usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
Many patients choose dermaplaning when they want an immediate skin refresh before an event or as part of a regular skin-maintenance routine. In some cases, dermaplaning may be paired with treatments such as HydraFacial MD, chemical peels, or other skin rejuvenation procedures. We’ll help you understand how these treatments may work together and whether a combined approach makes sense for your skin.
Recovery and Results
Dermaplaning requires little to no downtime.
After your treatment:
- Skin often looks smoother, brighter, and more even right away.
- Mild redness or sensitivity may occur and usually resolves within a few hours.
- Skin may feel slightly tight or dry for a short time.
- Most patients return to normal activities immediately.
Because freshly exfoliated skin can be more sun-sensitive, sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is recommended, and harsh exfoliants or active ingredients like retinol should be avoided for a few days after treatment.
Results typically last for several weeks. Many patients schedule dermaplaning every 4 to 6 weeks to keep their skin looking clear, healthy, and refreshed throughout the year.
